Our story

Honoring Legacy, Healing Generations

A Legacy of Faith, Service, and Unshakable Love

St. Xavier Community Medical Centre rises from a foundation of love, service, and profound loss. This is not just another medical facility it is the living legacy of two remarkable individuals whose lives were dedicated to the people of Mpala. late Elizabeth Nalubowa Mukasa, and Late Francis Xavier Mukasa, were the founders of St. Kizito Mpala Primary School at Mpala, established in the 1960s. Their vision was to provide access to education in a rural village that had been long overlooked. For nearly 25 years, they nurtured and sustained that school until it transitioned into a government institution as policies evolved.

.While Elizabeth shaped young minds,a dedicated teacher, became a second mother to every child in the community. She gave her life to education not just in the classroom, but in every moment she spent shaping the hearts and futures of her students. Her husband Xavier lived an extraordinary dual life. As a professional accountant, he served with distinction at the Ministry of Geological Survey, Ministry of Works, the Uganda Judiciary, and Nkumba University. Yet his greatest work happened not behind a desk, but on the dusty roads of Mpala. For over 40 years, Francis Xavier volunteered tirelessly in our community as a Catholic catechist, riding his bicycle from home to home throughout the community. He visited the sick, prayed with those on hospice, and offered final prayers at burials. He prepared couples for marriage, counseled those in troubled relationships, and guided children through every stage of their Catholic faith formation. Week after week, he preached at Mary Queen of Martyrs Mpala Catholic Parish Church not for payment, but out of love for God and his people.

The Need Becomes Personal

Even after retirement, Xavier’s mission never stopped. One morning, while preparing to visit someone in need, he suffered a stroke. He was bedridden for 8 years, cared for by his family without professional support no Personal Protective equipment, no adult diapers, no training in preventing bedsores or managing speech and movement loss. No physical therapists. No support systems. Just love, determination, and faith.

Our mission was born from tragedy. What began as a treatable oxygen deficiency for Elizabeth quickly escalated into a life threatening emergency. By the time her family managed to transport her to a hospital with proper equipment, it was too late she had already de-circulated. A life dedicated to nurturing others was cut short by the very challenge we now seek to address: lack of accessible, equipped healthcare facilities in rural communities.

St. Xavier Community Medical Centre stands as a living testament to these two extraordinary lives. Just as Xavier rode his bicycle to those who needed him, our mobile clinics will travel to those who cannot reach us. Just as Elizabeth nurtured the children of Mpala, our facility will provide care and healing to all generations.

We are building more than walls and rooms we are creating a place where the spirit of service that defined Xavier and Elizabeth will continue to touch lives for generations to come.

A Message From Ritah – Co-Founder, St. Xavier Community Medical Centre

Dear Friends,

It is with deep humility and profound purpose that I welcome you to St. Xavier Community Medical Centre’s website.

This project is not merely a building of brick and mortar, but the manifestation of a promise a promise born from both love and loss. As the child of Francis Xavier and Elizabeth Nalubowa Mukasa, I witnessed firsthand how lives of service can transform a community, and how the absence of adequate healthcare can shatter a family.

Working as a Nursing Assistant at Evergreen Hospital and Overlake Hospital in Washington State has further shaped my vision. Every day, I witness the power of compassionate, accessible healthcare and how it transforms lives. I’ve seen how proper equipment, trained staff, and timely intervention make the difference between life and death the very resources my mother lacked in her time of need.

When my mother began experiencing oxygen deficiency a treatable condition we found ourselves in a desperate race against time. By the time we reached a properly equipped facility, it was too late. And when my father suffered a stroke after decades of cycling through Mpala to minister to others, we cared for him at home for eight years without professional support or guidance.

These experiences changed me forever. They revealed a critical gap in our community that no family should have to face. They also showed me the extraordinary resilience and compassion that emerges when we care for one another.

My work in healthcare has given me both the knowledge and determination to bring the standards of care I provide in America to the community that shaped me. I’ve seen what’s possible when healthcare is done right, and I’ve experienced the tragic consequences when it’s absent. This perspective guides every aspect of St. Xavier Community Medical Centre’s design and mission.

St. Xavier Community Medical Centre represents both a memorial and a mission. Each brick laid honors my parents’ legacy of service. Each room completed brings us closer to ensuring that no one in Mpala will be denied timely, quality healthcare due to distance or lack of resources.

As you explore our website, I invite you to see beyond the construction updates and facility plans. See instead the teacher who shaped countless young minds. See the catechist who rode his bicycle for over 40 years to bring comfort to those in need. See the future where their work continues through modern healthcare that reaches everyone in our community.

Your interest in our project means everything to us. Whether you offer prayers, partnership, or financial support, you become part of this continuing story of service and healing.

With my deepest gratitude and hope for the future we build together,
